Chlorine Dioxide

What has been discovered, tested and reported about this amazing molecule?

What is this page all about?

This page on this site is strictly intended to be a repository of reputable lab data and studies collected on the effectiveness of the molecule, Chlorine Dioxide, on a variety of microbes and some pathogens. This is here for information purposes only and not intended to replace the approval and registration process of the US EPA. We will continually add new material to this page for your review and consideration.

Study: Antiviral Effect of Chlorine Dioxide Against Influenza Virus and Its Application for Infection Control

Key Points from Study Abstract:

  • The study was prompted the outbreaks of Avian Influenza (H5N1) and Swine Flu (H1N1) and a search for a better means of providing surface AND air disinfection.
  • The desire to restrict the spread of infection is the core and reasonable objective.
  • Recent (other) studies had demonstrated the superior ability of ClO2 to denature proteins, so this raised its ranking among disinfection options when this study was conducted in 2010.
  • The additional fact that it was active in this antiviral activity at a gaseous dose of just 0.03ppm also made it a very attractive option. This is compared to the OSHA standard that a building occupant can be exposed to up to 0.1ppm for 8 hours in any given day.

Key Points from Study Conclusion:

  • The study cited that ClO2 is effective against many viruses (see section 3.1) at under 10ppm and in less than 1 minute.
  • The study also cited that to achieve the same level of efficacy from Sodium Hypochlorite (bleach) required 10 TIMES the concentration (100 ppm).
  • The study showed that at less than 1/3 of the OSHA weighted average exposure to ClO2 gas, that ClO2 was able to inactivate Influenza without any harm to mice.
  • The study also showed that when the gas was released in a cafeteria of school children at these levels, no gas was noticed and absenteeism dropped - children stayed healthier.

A Very Similar Study: Efficacy and Safety Evaluation of a Chlorine Dioxide Solution.

Reason for Inclusion for Your Evaluation:

  • In this study they establish some important facts:
  • All bacteria tests were at half of the above concentration (5 ppm), fungi evaluations were at 20 ppm.
  • ClO2 is non-toxic in drinking water at levels of up to 40 ppm.
  • The ClO2 product used here was produced from food-grade salt.

Article from Best Vet Solutions: Why Chlorine Dioxide Should be Your Choice for [Continuous Poultry] Water Sanitation

Excerpts from the Article:

  • 'Chlorine Dioxide technology has really taken off over the past couple of years in the poultry industry and has shown to be a great alternative to Chlorine and even stabilized Hydrogen Peroxide for continuous water sanitation.'
  • 'ClO2 is chemically quite different from Chlorine. ClO2 only has 2/3 the oxidation potential of Chlorine or stabilized Hydrogen Peroxide but it has 2.5 times more oxidation capacity compared to both of those chemicals.'
  • 'ClO2 is NOT pH dependent like Chlorine and can disinfect your water from a pH of 2 to 10. It is far less corrosive on equipment compared to Chlorine.'
  • 'ClO2 can work on and eliminate biofilm, take out sulfur odors and helps eliminate mineral build up and filtering / removing iron out of your water becomes more effective.'
  • 'ClO2 technology over other products is because of CLO2’s ability to be a ‘selective’ oxidizer when working in your water system.'
  • 'CLO2 can generally be effective at 5 ppm TOTAL and 1 ppm FREE residual activity in your water.'

Complete List of Studies: Against What Microbes is Chlorine Dioxide Effective as a Biocide?

Disclaimer:

  • This list has been available in many forms and on numerous ClO2 sites, showing a massive number of studies as to the effectiveness of ClO2 on various pathogenic and non-pathogenic microbes. We do not know it original author, nor make any claim as to its full veracity, only that it may be an excellent starting point for a study of your own.
