Study: Antiviral Effect of Chlorine Dioxide Against Influenza Virus and Its Application for Infection Control

Key Points from Study Abstract:

  • The study was prompted the outbreaks of Avian Influenza (H5N1) and Swine Flu (H1N1) and a search for a better means of providing surface AND air disinfection.
  • The desire to restrict the spread of infection is the core and reasonable objective.
  • Recent (other) studies had demonstrated the superior ability of ClO2 to denature proteins, so this raised its ranking among disinfection options when this study was conducted in 2010.
  • The additional fact that it was active in this antiviral activity at a gaseous dose of just 0.03ppm also made it a very attractive option. This is compared to the OSHA standard that a building occupant can be exposed to up to 0.1ppm for 8 hours in any given day.

Key Points from Study Conclusion:

  • The study cited that ClO2 is effective against many viruses (see section 3.1) at under 10ppm and in less than 1 minute.
  • The study also cited that to achieve the same level of efficacy from Sodium Hypochlorite (bleach) required 10 TIMES the concentration (100 ppm).
  • The study showed that at less than 1/3 of the OSHA weighted average exposure to ClO2 gas, that ClO2 was able to inactivate Influenza without any harm to mice.
  • The study also showed that when the gas was released in a cafeteria of school children at these levels, no gas was noticed and absenteeism dropped - children stayed healthier.
