As summer rolls in, the excitement of camping season begins! You’re ready to unzip that tent, unlock the RV, and embrace the fresh air and open road—until you’re hit with the unmistakable smell of mold and mustiness. It’s a common scenario for many outdoor enthusiasts pulling their gear out of storage.
But don’t panic. While mold is a red flag, it’s one that can be dealt with safely and effectively—and you don’t have to throw anything out or mask the problem with chemicals.
Mold Is More Than a Nuisance—It's a Health Hazard
Mold thrives in damp, dark environments, making tents, cushions, and RV interiors prime real estate for it after a long winter. That “musty” smell is more than unpleasant—it can signal the presence of dangerous mold types like:
-
Black Mold (Stachybotrys chartarum): Can trigger serious respiratory problems and immune issues.
-
Aspergillus: Commonly found in enclosed spaces and known to worsen asthma and respiratory conditions.
Breathing in mold spores is not safe, especially in enclosed spaces like RVs or tents. Simply airing it out or spraying a scented deodorizer may mask the smell—but it won’t stop the spores from lingering or spreading and ruining your vacation.
Why Chlorine Dioxide (ClO₂) is the Right Solution
Unlike bleach, Ammonia, Candles and/or fragrance sprays, chlorine dioxide works as a selective oxidizer—it targets mold and odor-causing compounds without damaging your fabric, foam, or hard surfaces.
CLO₂ penetrates deep into materials, eliminating mold at the molecular level, not just on the surface. That means no lingering spores, no cover-ups, and no guesswork.

- Assess the Area: Look for mold spots, stains, and sniff for musty odors in RV Curtain Fabrics, foam cushions, wall corners, or ceilings.
- Clean First: Wipe down solid surfaces with a CLO2 solution to remove any visible debris or dirt.
- Prepare for Treatment: Use our Envirotab 2 x 20g Air Space Deodorizing Kit. Place the tablets in water as directed in a container inside your RV or tent.
- Seal the Space: Close all windows, doors, and vents to allow the CLO₂ gas to fill the space and treat affected areas.
- Let It Work: Leave it sealed for several hours or overnight. The chlorine dioxide vapor will eliminate mold, mildew, and odors.
- Ventilate Thoroughly: After treatment, open everything up and allow fresh air to circulate before using the space again.
How to Use Chlorine Dioxide for Your Tent
Getting ready for summer camping and discovered your tent smells musty or shows signs of mold? Don’t worry—chlorine dioxide (ClO₂) can safely and effectively restore your tent and make it safe to sleep in again.
- Set Up and Inspect the Tent
Take your tent outside and fully set it up. Inspect the fabric, seams, and zippers for signs of mold, mildew, or water damage. Pay attention to any musty odors—these often indicate hidden mold. - Lightly Clean the Surface
Use a mild soap or vinegar solution to wipe down any visible dirt or mildew. Avoid bleach or harsh chemicals, which can damage the tent fabric and leave behind toxic residue. - Prepare the CLO₂ Treatment
Use the Envirotab 2 x 20g Air Space Deodorizing Kit. Place the tablets in water in the spill-proof container provided. Set this container inside the tent on a level stable surface, preferably in the center. - Seal the Tent
Zip all doors and windows shut to contain the gas. For added effect, cover the tent with a tarp to help hold the chlorine dioxide vapor longer—especially if your tent is made from breathable materials. - Let It Work
Leave the tent sealed for at least 6–8 hours, or overnight for more intensive treatment. The CLO₂ gas will eliminate mold spores, mildew, and musty odors deep within the fabric. - Ventilate Thoroughly
Unzip all tent flaps and allow fresh air to circulate. Chlorine dioxide doesn’t leave toxic residue, but good airflow ensures any remaining gas dissipates before use or storage. - Store It Right
Make sure the tent is completely dry before packing it up. Store it in a breathable bag (not plastic) and keep it in a cool, dry place to prevent future mold growth.
Breathe Easy and Camp Clean
Getting back out into nature shouldn’t come with health risks. With chlorine dioxide tablets, you can confidently remove mold from tents and RVs, protect your family, and enjoy every breath of fresh air this summer.
